David Osipovitch WIDHOPFF (1867-1933)
Diplômé de l'Académie impériale d'Odessa, David Widhopff part pour Munich où il entre à l'Académie royaledans la classe de Johann Caspar Herterich (1843-1905). Venu à Paris en août 1887, il entre à l'Académie Julianoù il est l'élève de Tony Robert-Fleury et Jules Joseph Lefebvre. Il expose aux Salons de 1888, 1891 et 1893. Il voyage au Brésil et fonde une école des beaux-arts dans l'État du Pará. De retour à Paris, il vit à Montmartre et se lie avec Alfons Mucha et Léon Deschamps, directeur de la revue La Plume où il publie des portraits charges. Il rencontre aussi Hugues Delorme et Jules Roques au Courrier français, d'où naît une collaboration fructueuse pour l'illustration de l'hebdomadaire en compagnie entre autres de Willette. Il en devient le principal fournisseur de dessin et de portraits de personnalités des arts et du spectacle à partir de 1896. Il collabore aussi à la revue l'Assiette au beurre, à Cocorico et à celle d'Ogoniok de Saint-Pétersbourg
Il peint aussi des paysages de Normandie, de Touraine et de Provence, ainsi que des scènes de rue et des portraits d'intérieur à la palette très contrastée et de plus en plus stylisés, et les expose au Salon des indépendants, au Salon d'automne et au Salon des Tuileries.
l est qualifié par ses amis d’« Hercule aussi puissant par l’âme que par le torse… qui a enchanté Paris par sa force, sa bonté son cœur inépuisable, son inépuisable talent… ayant le goût de la santé, de la puissance, des femmes… sa puissance n’empêche pas sa finesse ni son énormité sa grâce. »
Selon le Dictionnaire Bénézit : « Ce Russe du Sud fut un parfait Parisien du Nord : un Montmartrois de la belle époque, lié à la rive gauche seulement, si l'on peut dire ainsi, par ce Widhopff de pierre bellement taillé par Chana Orloff. Paysagiste, peintre de natures mortes, cet artiste a exécuté aussi des cartons de tapisserie pour les Gobelins et Beauvais. »

Coming to Paris in August 1887, he entered the Académie Julian where he was a student of Tony Robert-Fleury and Jules Joseph Lefebvre. He exhibited at the Salons of 1888, 1891 and 1893. He traveled to Brazil and founded a school of fine arts in the state of Pará. Back in Paris, he lived in Montmartre and became friends with Alfons Mucha and Léon Deschamps, director of the magazine La Plume where he published charged portraits. He also met Hugues Delorme and Jules Roques at Courrier français, from which a fruitful collaboration was born for the illustration of the weekly in the company of Willette, among others. He became the main supplier of drawings and portraits of personalities from the arts and entertainment from 1896. He also collaborated with the magazine L'Assiette au Beurre, in Cocorico and that of Ogoniok in Saint Petersburg.
He also painted landscapes of Normandy, Touraine and Provence, as well as street scenes and interior portraits with a very contrasting palette and increasingly stylized, and exhibited them at the Salon des Indépendants, at the Salon d' autumn and at the Salon des Tuileries.
He is described by his friends as “Hercules, as powerful in his soul as in his torso… who enchanted Paris with his strength, his goodness, his inexhaustible heart, his inexhaustible talent… having a taste for health, power, of women… her power does not prevent her finesse nor her enormity her grace. »
According to the Bénézit Dictionary: “This Russian from the South was a perfect Parisian from the North: a Montmartre from the belle époque, linked to the left bank only, if we can say so, by this stone Widhopff beautifully carved by Chana Orloff. Landscaper, still life painter, this artist also created tapestry cartoons for Gobelins and Beauvais. »
